The answer is: x = -28

This is because -1/3 times (9x + 42) equals (-3x - 14). After multiplying you then subtract -3x - (-5x) which becomes -3x + 5x and equals to = 2x (this is because subtracting by a negative number cancels out both negative signs and transforms it into a plus sign). You then add 14 to both sides of the equation with 2x - 14 (+14) become simply just 2x and -70 (+14) becoming -56.

The equation is now

2x = -56

So you must simply divide -56 by 2 and get:

X = -28
