Mitosis is considered an “equational” form of cell division — it occurs in cells that do not produce gametes (e.g., somatic cells). During mitosis, a cell divides once to produce two daughter cells with genetic material identical to that of the original parent cell and to each other

Because, in general, the 2 daughters cell are identical to the single parent cell: the daughter cells have the same number of chromosomes as each other and as the parent cell, and the daughters cells are genetically identical to each other and to the parent cell. That is not true for meiosis, in which all the daughter cells differ from each other genetically, and from the parent cell both genetically and in the number of chromosomes.
