To find the difference between the rates of the runners, we have to do

subtraction

\because d=(1)/(2)-(1)/(3)

To do the subtraction we must make the denominators the same

∵ The lowest common multiple of 2 and 3 is 6

\begin{gathered} \therefore d=(1*3)/(2*3)-(1*2)/(3*2) \\ \therefore d=(3)/(6)-(2)/(6) \end{gathered}

Now we can subtract their numerators

\begin{gathered} \because d=(3)/(6)-(2)/(6) \\ \therefore d=(1)/(6) \end{gathered}

The difference is 1/6
