• Word problem:

Carla is a music teacher. She earns $20 of commission per new student and a salary of $200.

Last month she earned a total of 300.

How many new students were last month?

• variable:

x = number of new students

• Equation:

200+20x = 300

• Solution:

200+20x=300

Subtract 200 from both sides of the equation

200-200+20x = 300-200

20x=100

Divide both sides by20:

20x/20 = 100/20

x= 5

• Conclusion.

Last month, 5 new students were inscribed.
