A square red placement has a gold square in the center.

The side length of the gold square = (x+2) inches

and the width = 4 inches

Thus the area if the red part of the placement is the product od width and the dimension of square

\begin{gathered} (x+2)^2-4^2 \\ x^2+4+4x-16 \\ x^2+4x-12 \end{gathered}

Area of the p;ace is x^2+4x-12
