SOLUTION

The average of the 5 numbers become

\begin{gathered} \text{Average =}((42)/(1)+(1)/(8)+(44)/(1)+(5)/(8)+(3)/(4))\text{ divided by 5} \\ \\ \text{Average = }(336+1+352+5+6)/(8)\text{ divided by 5} \\ \\ \text{Average = }(700)/(8)\text{ divided by 5} \\ \\ \text{Average =}(700)/(8)*(1)/(5) \\ (700)/(40) \\ \\ (70)/(4) \\ \\ (35)/(2) \\ \\ \text{Average = 17}(1)/(2) \end{gathered}
