Given the length of the base of the cereal box is 8 inches and the width of the cereal box is 3 inches. The height of the cereal box is 12 inches.

The cardboard is needed to make the box is equal to the surface area of the box. The surface area of the rectangle is given by

\begin{gathered} S=2(lw+wh+hl) \\ =2(8*3+3*12+12*8) \\ =2(24+36+96) \\ =2(156) \\ =312 \end{gathered}

Hence, the cardboard is needed to make the box equal 312 square inches.
