We were told that he used 2 cups of milk to make a cake, used 1/2 cup more to make frosting and he drank 3/4 cup. Thus, the total number of cups that he used is

2 + 1/2 + 3/4

= (8 + 2 + 3)/4

= 13/4

= 3 1/4 cups

He used 3 1/4 cups in all
