1. Why do you think that Amelia Earhart, an international celebrity, took the time to respond to June Pierson, a 13-year-old girl she did not know?

2. Earhart’s first advice is to make sure that June Pierson is physically fit to fly. Do you

think that flying today still requires a high level of physical health? Why or why not?

3. If June cannot learn to fly, what are some of the other options Earhart presents? Why do

you think Earhart is less than completely certain that June Pierson will be able to realize

her dream of becoming a pilot? Do you think similar advice would be given to a young

woman today who wants to become a pilot?

4. Today woman can work as commercial (“regular scheduled air line”) pilots, but the vast

majority of pilots are men. Do you think Amelia Earhart would be pleased or

disappointed to learn that in 2016, 5.12 percent of commercial pilots in the United States

are women?

Answer:

June Pierson was inspired also to become an aviator. Amelia Earhart quoted to her: "if you are really determined to fly, and are willing to make the sacrifices necessary, I should certainly not discourage you from the attempt. There are many positions in aviation open to women, not only in the clerical field but in the factories. There are air hostesses and a number of specialized jobs."
