You can divide the shape below into two figures: A rectangle and a square.

See the picture below:

The area of the rectangle can be calculated using this formula:


A_r=lw

Where "l" is the length and "w" is the width.

In this case:


\begin{gathered} l=16ft \\ w=5ft \end{gathered}

Then, you can substitute values into the formula and evaluate:


A_r=(16ft)(5ft)=80ft^2

The area of a square can be found with this formula:


A_s=s^2

Where "s" is the length of any side of the square.

In this case:


s=7ft

Then, the area of this square is:


A_s=(7ft)^2=49ft^2

Now you can set up that the total area of the shape will be:
