Given: The ratio of red shirt to blue shirt to be 5:3

To Determine: each of the statement are possible or impossible or always true

Solution

Examine each of the statement

Statement 1: There are exactly 20 more red shirts blue shirts in a shipment

We were not given the total number of shirt in the shipment. Therefore, the statement is impossible

Statement 2: There are 5 times as many as red shirts as blue shirts in a shipment

The ration is 5:3 and not 5:1. Therefore, the statement is impossible

Statement 3: A shipment has exactly 35 red shirts and exactly 21 shirts

(35)/(21)=(5)/(3)

It can be seen that 35 ratio 21 is equivalent to 5:3. Even though we do not the exact number of shirts in the shipment. Then, we conclude based on this, the statement given is: possible

Statement 4: A shipment has exactly 16 red shirts

Because, we do not know the exactly shirts in the shipment. The statement might be true or not.

Therefore, the statement is possible

Statement 5: There are 3 blue shirts for every 8 shirts in the shipment

The total ratio given is

ratio=3:8=(3)/(8)

So, we can conclude that there are 3 blue shirts for every 8 shirts in the shipment is always truth
