The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula

P=2L+2W

we have

P=16 in

L=W+4

substitute given values in the formula

\begin{gathered} 16=2(W+4)+2W \\ solve\text{ for W} \\ 16=2W+8+2W \\ 4W=16-8 \\ 4W=8 \\ W=2\text{ in} \end{gathered}

Find out the value of L

\begin{gathered} L=W+4 \\ L=2+4 \\ L=6\text{ in} \end{gathered}

The width is 2.0 inches
