A class consists of 1/3 freshmen, 1/6 sophomores, and 1/6 juniors; the rest are seniors. What fraction of the class is seniors?

let the entire class represents 1,so

class= freshmen +sophomores+junior+senior

replace


\begin{gathered} 1=(1)/(3)+(1)/(6)+(1)/(6)+\text{senior} \\ 1=(2)/(3)+\text{senior} \\ \end{gathered}

now, to solve the equaiton subtract 2/3 in both sides


\begin{gathered} 1=(2)/(3)+\text{senior} \\ 1-(2)/(3)=(2)/(3)+\text{senior-}(2)/(3) \\ (1)/(3)=\text{senior} \end{gathered}

it means 1/3 of the class is senior
