CO2 is transported in the blood from the tissue to the lungs. It can be dissolved in the blood, buffered with water as carbonic acid, bound to plasma proteins or hemoglobin or converted into bicarbonate. Majority of of CO2 is transported as bicarbonate in plasma. 62% exists as bicarbonate in plasma. 26 %The bulk of bicarbonate is produced inside the cell and transported to the plasma.
