It took 78.5 feet of fencing to surround the edge of a circular stage. To set up for a conference, Tina wanted to set up rows of chairs across the circular stage. Each chair is 2.5 feet wide. What is the largest number of chairs she can fit in one row? Use 3.14 for pi.

Answer: 10 chairs

Explanation:

The circular stage will be treated as a circle.

The 78.5 feet surrounds the circle so this is the circumference.

You need to find the diameter because that is the distance across the circle.

Circumference = π * diameter

Diameter = Circumference / π

= 78.5 / 3.14

= 25 feet

The distance across the circle is 25 ft, the number of chairs that can fit is therefore:

= Distance / Width of chair

= 25 / 2.5

= 10 chairs
