Simplify;

\begin{gathered} \sqrt[\square]{-16} \\ =\sqrt[]{16}*\sqrt[\square]{-1} \\ =4*\sqrt[]{-1} \\ \text{Note that }\sqrt[]{-1}=i \\ \text{The square root of -1 is not a real number hence is denoted by i (imaginary number)} \\ \text{Therefore, } \\ \sqrt[]{-16}=4i \end{gathered}

The answer is NOT a real number, that is 4i
