Step 2:


Total\text{ number of people on hike = 5}

Step 3:


\begin{gathered} Number\text{ of gallons needed by the 5 people } \\ \text{= 5 }*\text{ }(7)/(8) \\ =\text{ }(35)/(8)\text{ gallons} \end{gathered}
