Kidneys have other functions besides the elimination of wastes from the blood.

They are in charge of producing three different hormones that are released into the bloodstream. These are: Erythropoietin, which is involved in the generation of new red blood cells; Renin, which is involved in the regulation of blood pressure; Calcitriol, which regulates calcium uptake.
