$\begin{gathered} 1+5x<-9 \\ \text{Subtract 1 from both sides} \\ 1+5x-1<-9-1 \\ 5x<-10 \end{gathered}$

Dividing both sides by 5, we have

$\begin{gathered} (5x)/(5)<(-10)/(5) \\ x<-2 \end{gathered}$
