If x+y=-10 and x-y=2, what is the value of x?

In order to solve this system for x, we can add both equations:


\begin{gathered} x+y+(x-y)=-10+2 \\ 2x=-8 \\ x=-(8)/(2) \\ x=-4 \end{gathered}

So the value of x is -4.
