Surface area
Initial explanation
In order to find the total surface area of the tent we will have to find the area of each face of it. In this case, we have four faces:
We have that:
Finding each face area
Triangles: figure 1 and 3
We have that figure 1 and 3 have the same size:
The area of a triangle is given by:
(base x height)/2
In this case,
base = 5 ft
height = 6 ft
Then
(base x height)/2 = (5 ft x 6 ft)/2
= 30 ft²/2 = 15 ft²
area of figures 1 and 3 is 15 ft²
Rectangles
We have that figure 2 and 4 have the same size:
The area of a rectangle is given by:
side 1 x side 2
In this case,
side 1 = 6.5 ft
side 2 = 6.5 ft
Then,
side 1 x side 2 = 6.5 ft x 6.5 ft
= 42.25 ft²
area of figures 2 and 4 is 42.25 ft²
Total surface area
In order to find it, we just add all the areas:
total area = area 1 + area 2 + area 3 + area 4
We found that:
area 1 = 15 ft²
area 2 = 42.25 ft²
area 3 = 15 ft²
area 4 = 42.25 ft²
Then,
total area = area 1 + area 2 + area 3 + area 4
↓
total area = 15 ft² + 42.25 ft² + 15 ft² + 42.25 ft²
= 114.5 ft²
Answer- D: 114.5 ft²
