The ladder is 10 feet long and it is 3 feet away from the wall. The wall act as a straight line . The ladder is leaning on the wall . This scenerio can be modelled like a right angle triangle. The distance from the base of the ladder to the base of the wall is the adjacent side of the triangle. The ladder itself forms the hypotenuse side while the height of the wall is the opposite sides. The diagram can be modelled below

The opposite side of the triangle where the top of the ladder leaned on the wall to the base of the wall(how high the ladder lean on the wall) can be calculated using pythagora's theorem.

\begin{gathered} c^2=a^2+b^2 \\ c=10ft \\ a=3ft \\ b=\text{?} \\ 10^2=3^2+b^2 \\ 100-9=b^2 \\ b^2=91 \\ b=√(91) \\ b=9.53939201417ft \\ b\approx9.54ft \end{gathered}
