The number is 5

1) Let's call this number by "n", so we can write out the following:

4(n-3)=3n-7

Note that four times the difference makes reference to the operation.

2) So let's move on, applying the Distributive Property

\begin{gathered} 4(n-3)=3n-7 \\ 4n-12=3n-7 \\ 4n-3n-12=3n-3n-7 \\ n-12=-7 \\ n=12-7 \\ n=5 \end{gathered}

As we can see we had to isolate n on one side.

3)Hence, the answer is 5
