System of Equations

We are given the system of equations:

2x + 3y = 6

-8x - 12y = -20

To try to solve it, we multiply the first equation by 4:

8x + 12y = 24

And add it to the second equation:

-8x + 8x - 12y + 12y = -20+ 24

All the variables cancel out:

0 = 4

This last false equation comes from the fact that we tried to find a solution to the system that does not have any solution.

This happens because the lines represented by each equation are parallel and parallel lines never meet.

Answer: The system has 0 solutions
