21. A class was developing models to help explain the stages of mitosis. A student asked what would happen if one of the centromeres did not connect to spindle fibers. What would you predict the most likely answer would be based on the model for mitosis? Some of the chromosomes would not condense and become more visible.Chromosomes would not replicate and divide to form identical sister chromatids.A cleavage furrow would not form and the cells would not divide. The daughter cells would end up with a different number of chromosomes.

The correct answer is the last one: "The daughter cells would end up with a different number of chromosomes." Spindle fibers are the ones that carry chromosomes to each pole, that will convert into a new cell as mytosis advances. Thus, if the chromosome does not match to spindle fiber, it might not be carry away properly and could end in another cell. That daughter cell would have an aytipical number of chormosomes.
