Hong Tang's gross weekly salary is $615. His weekly federal withholding is $55. The Social Security tax is 6.2 percent of the first $90,000. The Medicare tax is 1.45 percent of gross pay. The state tax is 1.5 percent of gross pay. Each week he pays $22.40 for medical insurance. How much is deducted from Tang's weekly wages for state tax and Medicare tax combined?

We have that the Medicare tax is 1.45% of gross pay, and the state tax is 1.5%. Then, if Hong Tang's gross weekly salary is $615, then::

\begin{gathered} (615)(0.0145)=8.92 \\ (615)(0.015)=9.22 \\ \Rightarrow8.92+9.22=18.14 \end{gathered}

therefore, from state tax and Medicare tax combined, Hong Tang gets deducted $18.14
