Question is WHY DIVIDE BY 8?? in the 5th step??

Belwo is the problem
Glen collects a total of 450 stamps from the United States,Great Britain,and India. In his collection, 52% of the stamps are US stamps. He has 3/5 as many Indian stamps as British stamps. How many Indian stamps does Glen have? What percent of Glen' collection are British stamps?

50% of 450 = 225
2% of 450 = 4.5 x 2 = 9
so 52% of 450 is 234 (US Stamps)

~

450 - 234 = 216
216 / 8 = 27

Answer:

I agree with you that step 5 doesn't make sense.

In step 4 he had accurately determined that there were 216 British and Indian stamps.

B = number of British stamps

N = number of Indian stamps (using N because "I" looks too much like a "1")

B + N = 216

3/5B = N

substitute for N:

B + 3/5B = 216

8/5B = 216

divide both sides of the equation by 8:

1/5B = 27

multiply both sides of the equation by 5:

B = 135

N = 81

It appears that step 5 is missing the "multiply by 5".
