-3x + y = 2 (a)

-x+ y = 4 (b)

Subtract (b) to (a) in order to eliminate y:

-3x + y = 2

-

-x + y = 4

__________

-2x = -2

Solve for x:

x = -2/-2

x= 1

Replace x = 1 on any initial equation and solve for y:

-x+y = 4

-1 + y = 4

y= 4+1

y= 5

Solution:

x= 1 ; y= 5
