The distance, d, varies directly with the time, t. If you have driven 175 miles for 5 hours. How long would it take you to drive 245 miles?

1) Gathering the data

Varies directly

175 miles for 5 hours.

245 miles?

2) Since this is a direct variation

Then we can set a proportion. Presuming the driver will remain constantly at the same speed.

175 miles--------------5 hours.

245 miles------------- t

Cross multiply

175t = 245 x 5

175t =1225

t=7

It would take 7 hours to drive 245 miles.
