16) When spiking a volleyball, a player changes the velocity of the ball from 4.2 m/s to -24 m/s; along a certain direction. If the impulse delivered to the ball by the player is -9.3 kg m/s, what is the mass of the volleyball?

Given that initial velocity of the ball u = 4.2 m/s

Final velocity of the ball is v= -24m/s

Impulse of the ball, J= -9.3 kg m/s

If m is the mass of the ball, then

J=\text{ m(v-u)}

Substituting the values, we get

\begin{gathered} m=(-9.3)/(-24-4.2) \\ =0.32\text{ kg} \end{gathered}

Hence the mass of the volleyball is 0.32 kg.
