Kennedy noticed that the past five months, not including March, had the following rain totals: [ 7.02, 1.76, 7.62, 4.08, 1.73 1 What is the Mean Absolute Deviation for the past five months?

step 1

Find out the mean of the data

so

mean=(7.02+1.76+7.62+4.08+1.73)/5

mean=22.21/5

mean=4.44

step 2

Remember that

Mean absolute deviation (MAD) of a data set is the average distance between each data value and the mean

so

7.02-4.44=2.58

4.44-1.76=2.68

7.62-4.44=3.18

4.44-4.08=0.36

4.44-1.73=2.71

step 3

Find the average

(2.58+2.68+3.18+0.36+2.71)/5

=11.51/5

=2.30

therefore

the answer is

Mean absolute deviation is 2.30
