Flying against the jetstream, a jet travels 2970 miles in 3 hours. Flying with the jetstream, the same jet travels 6050 miles in 5 hours. What is the rate of thejet in still air and what is the rate of the jetstream?Rate of the jet in still air:Rate of the jetstream:

let x = speed of the jet

let y = jet-stream speed

distance equation = time*speed

3(x -y) = 2970 (1)

5(x+y) = 6050 (2)

now we simplify both equations 1 and 2 as follows:

x - y = 990 (3)

x + y = 1210 (4)

Now we have to solve the equations's system, we can add both equations:

x - y = 990

x + y = 1210

------------------

2x = 2200

x = 1100 Rate of the jet in still air

Now we replace the x - value on equation 3:

1100 - y = 990

1100 - 990 = y

y = 110 Rate of the jetstream
