As an upholsterer, you need to determine how much fabric is needed to make seat cover. You are covering a piece of wood that is 10 inches x 10 inches x 2 1/4 inches. You need a least 5/8 inch of extra fabric on all sides. What are the minimum dimensions needed for the piece of fabric that will be used to cover the top (10 inches x 10 inches) part of the wood?

Given:

The dimension of the wood is

10\text{ inches }*\text{ 10 inches }*\text{ 2}(1)/(4)\text{ inches}

The amount of extra fabric needed on all sides: 5/8 inches

The diagram below shows the fabric with the extra fabric:

The minimum amount of fabric is the sum of the initial dimension plus the extra length

\begin{gathered} \text{length = 10 + }(5)/(8)\text{ + }(5)/(8) \\ =\text{ 11.25 or 11}(1)/(4)\text{ inches} \end{gathered}

Hence, the minimum dimensions of the fabric are:

=\text{ 11}(1)/(4)\text{ inches }*\text{ 11}(1)/(4)\text{ inches}
