We know than

< means "less than"

> means "bigger than"

Then, we write y is less than 0, replacing it with <:

y < 0

Since y is less than 0 then y can take values from minus infinity to cero. So it can be written as


y\epsilon(-\infty,0)

which is called the interval notation.
