Write 36,183.7 in scientific notation

\begin{gathered} 36183.7*10^0 \\ 3618.37*10^1 \\ In\text{ scientific notation becomes;} \\ 3.61837*10^4 \end{gathered}

Note that the number after the decimal point (7) is first of all moved to the front of the decimal, after which the entire number is now expressed in scientific notation by moving all the numbes after the first one (3), and placing them all behind the decimal. Hence you would now end up with 3.61837

Please note that when expressing numbers in scientific notation, the first number must be between 1 and 9.

That is why 36183.7 must be re-written as 3.61837
