We now that Jared bought 6 apples and bread, and each apple cost $ 0.50, in total he spent $9.00.

So the unknown value is the cost of bread that we call x, so the equation is:

\begin{gathered} \text{Total cost = Bread Cost + Apples Cost} \\ 9=x+0.5\cdot6 \\ 9=x+3 \\ x=9-3 \\ x=6 \end{gathered}

The total cost is the cost of bread (x) and the cost of apples ( 6 * 0.5).

The bread cost $ 6.00.
