Stp 1:

Given system of equations

3x - 2y = 12 ------------------------------1

6x + 8y = 17 -------------------------------2

Step 2:

Use elimination method to eliminate y.

First, make the coefficient of y equal by multiplying equation 1 by 8 and equation 2 by 2.

3x - 2y = 12 x 8

6x + 8y = 17 x 2

24x - 16y = 96 -------------------- 3

12x + 16y = 34 --------------------- 4

Add equation 3 and 4 to eliminate y.

36x = 130

x = 130/36

x = 65/18

To find y, eliminate x.

3x - 2y = 12 x 6

6x + 8y = 17 x 3

18x - 12y = 72 -------------------- 5

18x + 24y = 51 --------------------- 6

Subtract equation 5 and 6 to eliminate x.

- 36y = 21

y = -21/36

y = -7/12

Final answer

x = 65/18 and y = -7/12
