Part 1

The cost of a barbecue lunch per 3 people = $18.45

Mr Gaines has a budget of $1850.00

The question wants us to find the number of people that can be fed with his budget.

Part 2

The essential information needed is to find the cost of feeding 1 person.

If the cost of feeding 3 people = $18.45

Cost of feeding 1 person =$18.45/3 =$6.15

Let the number of people that can be fed on his budget =x

Therefore:

x=(1850)/(6.15)

Part 3

x=300.8

The number of people he can afford to feed will be 300.

Part 4

Although 300.8 approximates to 301

301 x 6.15 =$1851.15

300 x 6.15 =$1845

He cannot exceed his budget, so 300 is the correct solution.
