So to rewrite the function in standard form we will complete the square:


\begin{gathered} x^2-8x \\ =x^2-8x+(-4)^2-(-4)^2 \\ =(x-4)^2-(-4)^2 \\ g(x)=(x-4)^2-16 \end{gathered}

And from this equation we get that the vertex is (4, -16)
