In order for the data in the table to represent a linear
function with a rate of change of -8, what must be the
value of a?
a = 2
a = 3
a = 19
a = 35

Given

\begin{gathered} m=-8 \\ m=rate\text{ of change} \end{gathered}

To Determine: The value of a

Solution

\begin{gathered} x=10,y=27 \\ x=11,y=a \\ x=12,y=11 \end{gathered}

The rate of change can be determine by the formula below

rate-of-change=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

Since the rate of change is -8

Then

\begin{gathered} (a-27)/(11-10)=-8 \\ (a-27)/(1)=-8 \\ a-27=-8 \\ a=-8+27 \\ a=21 \end{gathered}
