f(x)=x^2+2x-3

in order to find the zeros of the function

0=x^2+2x-3

write the expression 2x as a difference

0=x^2+3x-x-3

factor x

0=x\cdot(x+3)-x-3

then rewrite -x-3

0=x\cdot(x+3)-(x+3)

factor x+3

0=(x+3)\cdot(x-1)

then the zeros of the function are

\begin{gathered} x+3=0 \\ x=-3 \\ x-1=0 \\ x=1 \\ \text{zeros are (-3,0) \& (1,0)} \end{gathered}
