Given the expression

|n-3|=5

to solve absolute value equation we need to keep in mind the function inside the absolute value (n-3 in this case) could be positive or negative

with this idea in mind absolute value as 2 possible solutions

1 when the function is positive (n-3)

2. when the function is negative -(n-3)

1. positive function

n-3+3=5+3
n=5+3
n=8

2. negative function

-n+3=5
-n=5-3
n=2*(-1)
n=-2

then possible solution for absolute value equation are

n=8

n=-2
