To determine if a compound is an acid or a base, we can use Arrhenius's definition, which says that if a compound has a Hydrogen, or a proton (H+) and releases it in a solution, this will be an acid. If the compound has a Hydroxide, OH-, and releases it in a solution, this will be a base.

Based on this definition, we will have:

a. HNO3, Nitric acid, this is an acid

b. HBr, Hydrobromic acid, this is an acid

c. NaOH, Sodium hydroxide, this is a base

d. H2CO3, Carbonic acid, this is an acid
