This air exchange that includes the capture of diatomic oxygen (or oxygen or O2), and the release of dioxide carbon (CO2) occurs in the lungs, but more specifically, in the alveoli; the oxygen from the air is diffused through these tissues and towards the cell membranes, in counterpart of CO2, which is diffused from the cells to this tissues and eventually released to the air, as we can see in the following pictures:
