If the temperature of a gas is constant, the pressure that the gas exerts varies inversely with the volume. If a gas, at constant temperature, has a volume of 76 in. when the pressure is 16 pounds per square inch, what will the volume be when the pressure is 64 pounds per square inch?

Answer: V2 = 19 cube inches

The temperature of a gas is constant

The pressure of the gas is inversely proportional to the the volume of the gas

this can be represented mathematically below,


\begin{gathered} P\text{ }\propto\text{ }(1)/(V) \\ P\text{ = }(k)/(V) \\ \text{K = PV} \\ \text{K is the proportionality constanst} \end{gathered}

P1V1 = P2V2

P1 = 16 pounds per square inch

V1 = 76 cube inches

P2 = 64 pounds per square inch

V2=?

16 x 76 = 64 x V2

1, 216 = 64 V2

Isolate V2

V2 = 1216 / 64

V2 = 19 cube inches
