As they are right angle triangles and 2 lines are perpendicular.

To find height of any shape we look for perpendicular line this also applies to segments.

Segments as seen below can only be cut off areas of a circle by either a chord touches line as shown second picture, or a secant which is a perpendicular use line . and crosses the line of the circle but is not shown in picture only the chord is.

Secant line still forms a segment but is only used usually with overlapping shapes some which are parallel in geometry solving for tangents or shading.
