From the diagram, the classmate is correct. This is because the interior angles that are on the opposite sides of the transversal are alternate angles.

Also, AD is parallel to BC on the diagram, this means that alternate interior angles BAC and ACD from the diagram are equal.

Then, in the diagram shown, we can see that the lines AD and DC are parallel also the horizontal lines on the diagram are parallel.

Since the angles BAC and ACD are equal(based on property of alternate angles), we can say that lines AD and BC are parallel to each other.

Using interior angle property of paralllel lines, the alternate angles are equal.
