Problem

Write an equation of the line that passes through (0,5) and (-1.5, 1).

Solution

The general equation for a line is given by:

y =mx +b

For this case we can calculate the slope with the following equation:

m=(y_2-y_1)/(x_2-x_1)

And for this special case we have x1= 0, y1= 5, x2= -1.5 , y2= 1 if we replace we got:

m=(1-5)/(-1.5-0)=(8)/(3)

Then we can use the point given (0,5) in order to find the value of b and we have this:

5 = 8/3 * (0) +b

b = 5

And our equation would be:

y= 8/3 x +5
