The ratio a:b can also be written as:

a\colon b=(a)/(b)

The equation is given to be:

(a)/(3)=(b)/(4)

Multiply both sides of the equation by 1/b:

\begin{gathered} (a)/(3)*(1)/(b)=(b)/(4)*(1)/(b) \\ \therefore \\ (a)/(3b)=(1)/(4) \end{gathered}

Multiply both sides of the equation by 3:

\begin{gathered} (a)/(3b)*3=(1)/(4)*3 \\ (a)/(b)=(3)/(4) \end{gathered}

Therefore, the ratio is:

a\colon b=3\colon4
