I need better understanding of simplifying if I could simplify this 2x + 5 = 13 how would it be done? and why?

\begin{gathered} 2x+5=13 \\ \text{subtract 5 from both sides} \\ 2x+5-5=13-5 \\ 2x=8 \\ x=(8)/(2) \\ x=4 \end{gathered}
